Newcastle sign Lens' Abeid
Newcastle have signed highly-rated Lens youngster Mehdi Abeid on a five-year contract.
Abeid, 18, is a defensive midfielder and had attracted the interest of Everton, Atletico Madrid, Rennes and Le Mans amng others. However he has been persuaded to move to the North East to continue his career.
"After eight fantastic years at Lens, I have stagnated. I needed a change of air. I am not afraid to leave for abroad," he told L'Equipe. "I have had contact dating back some time and I visited the facilities there [St James's Park] last week. I even trained with the reserve team.
"The leaders of the club told me about their plans and that they will rely on me for next season. For my part, I intend to give everything to develop in the Premier League. I already discussed things with Hatem Ben Arfa and Cheick Tiote and they encouraged me and welcomed my signature."
Reports have also suggested manager Alan Pardew has made an improved £10 million offer for Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro and stepped up his interest in Lille's Gervinho, although sources on Tyneside have played down the speculation.

Seeing Reo-coker can be a good backup to Tiote, was shocked that he refused to extend a 50k per week contract with Villa, thinking that he would be snapped up by a top club. Too "high end" for us perhaps. My wish list is still Sturridge, Menez, Walker, + one more striker

Everton to land Barton as Toon go for Cabaye Published 22:50 28/05/11 By Alan Oliver (2) Recommend
A full version of this story appears in today's People. Read it online at People.co.uk
Joey Barton seems set to achieve his boyhood ambition of playing for Everton.
A host of clubs including Aston Villa and Bayern Munich went on red alert when talks between Barton and Newcastle United broke down this week.
But the Toon are ready to accept a £4million bid for their 28-year-old midfielder – and it will be a case of third time lucky for Blues’ boss David Moyes, who has twice gone close to signing the Huyton-born once-capped midfielder.
Newcastle have already lined up Barton’s successor in the shape of Lille’s box-to-box midfielder Yohan Cabaye for just under £5m. They are also chasing Wolves skipper Karl Henry and Bayer Leverkusen’s Tranquillo Barnetta.

Cabaye set to join Toonsoccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/924559/lille-coach-rudi-garcia-confirms-yohan-cabaye-will-join-newcastle?cc=4716Lille coach Rudi Garcia has confirmed Yohan Cabaye is set to quit the French champions for Newcastle. Cabaye, a 25-year-old France international, told Canal Plus of his planned move to Tyneside over the weekend and Garcia said the same after LOSC completed their Ligue 1 season with a 3-2 win over Rennes on Sunday night. Garcia said: "Yohan told us yesterday - first me, then the whole group before the game - that he has chosen to join Newcastle. "It is a choice that I respect, although I wish he continued the adventure with us." The deal is believed to be costing the Magpies €5 million - the amount stipulated to release the player from his contract, which runs until 2013. Newcastle have also been linked with Cabaye's team-mate Gervinho, but Garcia insists there will be no other departures. "They are all under contract," he said. "The only one who can leave is Yohan Cabaye. All others are under contract and, if desired, will be in the squad next season." Cabaye has spent his entire professional career with Lille but hinted recently that he wanted a fresh challenge despite the club having enjoyed a hugely successful campaign with a league and Coupe de France double. He also made his senior France debut last August in a friendly against Norway, albeit as part of a shadow squad after coach Laurent Blanc suspended Les Bleus' World Cup flops for the game.

Newcastle eye Berbatov swoop
Dimitar Berbatov could swap the red of Manchester United for the black and white stripes of Newcastle United in the summer. The Bulgarian's future at Old Trafford looks to be coming to an end after being left out of the squad by Sir Alex Ferguson for the Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley last Saturday. And that is despite being the club and Premier League top scorer with 20 league goals during the concluded season. Now according to The Sun newspaper, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is ready to hand the 30-year-old a lifeline at St James Park. The Magpies are reportedly willing to meet United's £7.5million valuation for Berbatov, who would want to be appreciated at a club and be their main man. He is in fact is a childhood fan of Newcastle and idolised Toon legend Alan Shearer when he was a boy. However, it remains to be seen if he will be amenable to a move to Tyneside or fight for a place in the starting line-up at Old Trafford.

Don't give it to the cheaper ones like Demba Ba, Shane Long, or worse, Carlton Cole!!

Ranger was asked to leave!!! According to nufc.com
Nile Ranger is set for a shock summer exit from St James’ after Newcastle chiefs told the England under-20 striker to find a new club.
Despite handing him a five-year deal last year*, Alan Pardew informed Ranger last week he is not in his plans.
United chiefs believe he needs a new start to reinvigorate his fledgling career and believe only a permanent move away from the North East will give him that.
He was informed a loan – on the table last summer – is out of the question, and the club have already knocked back one proposal that involved a six-month temporary switch with the option of a permanent deal at the end of it.
Newcastle have put a price tag in excess of £1m on his head, and there has been initial interest from Bolton and QPR.
Neither has made a formal offer yet and, if he doesn’t find a new club – still a possibility – he will head back to Tyneside for pre-season on July 4 to face an uncertain future.
Ranger turned 20 in April of this year and after signing a three and a half year contract in April 2009, put pen to paper on an improved five year deal in December 2010 (while Chris Hughton was still in charge*).
Joining United as a free agent ahead of the 2008/09 season, Ranger scored on his Academy debut and within a week was an unused substitute at Arsenal, in what proved to be Kevin Keegan's final game as manager.
Awarded the Sport Newcastle "Wor Jackie" Award in 2009, Nile was called up to the England U19 side and made his senior club debut in the final seconds of our Championship opener at West Bromwich Albion that August..
December 2009 saw him score the first of three first team goals at Coventry City. Losing his place to the fit-again Shola Ameobi and new arrival Leon Best, the build up to United's Premier League return saw claims that Ranger could be shown the door over disciplinary issues.
He remained on Tyneside however, returning to starting first XI for Carling Cup ties against Accrington Stanley and Chelsea before making his Premier League bow off the bench in the home draw with Wigan Athletic.
The sale of Andy Carroll and a lack of available striking cover then saw Ranger remain at SJP, rather than go out on to a lower league club as had been expected.
Making a first top-flight start in our 0-1 loss at Aston Villa in April 2011, Nile's final appearance of the campaign came at Stamford Bridge, his 58th game for the club (47 of which came as substitute).
Within hours however, pictures of him posing with a replica firearm had appeared in the media and the club issued a statement in which Ranger "regretted" the incident.
That followed on from question marks about Ranger's attitude being raised previously by both Alan Pardew and his predecessor Chris Hughton.
As recently as March, Pardew commented that:
"I’ve said from day one that he needs to sort himself out as a professional footballer. He is always on the cusp of being late. We have stopped him being late but he is still frequently on the brink.
"We have only improved him five per cent. If he changed it to 50 per cent and was on time he would get belief from the other players.
"I think he is going to be a player. He is close. But whether that is with Newcastle is down to him. He has talent and we have to try and eke it out of him.
"We’re putting it all in front of him – the only excuse he has got is himself... It’s up to him now.”
I guess there will be a massive change in the team

I'm not sure if the massive change is good or a bad thing. It's really something debatable. For instance, 1) Newcastle isn't going to give Barton a new contract, 2) they only plan of giving Nolan a 2 years contract which he rejected because Nolan wants a 5years contract. 3) they're getting rid of ranger. Hot prospect he is, but he's just not scoring goals. Probably because of that, and according to pardew, not disciplined enough as well. In short, I think Newcastle is getting rid of the older players, making a massive change in the team. Well, with the calibre of cabaye, Ben arfa, tiote. You can probably see the Newcastle probably wants more than ordinary players. They're going for young quality players compared to fans favourites'. So, it may be a good thing right?

i wouldnt say its a good thing. on one hand, we've build a relatively strong bonded squad of players in Nolan, enrique, barton for example. Both Nolan and Barton aren't considered old .. and they are the backbone of our midfield.
to put it simply, last season squad was build around 'em.
While i am relishing the prospect of watching Cabaye...Abeid play next season ; the question remain as to on what capacity must the squad rebuild 'IF' we are without those players highlighted in bold next season...
